Jim Madden, a pioneer in the Minnesota resort industry, died at age 85 at his home in East Gull Lake after a long illness. Madden spent more than 60 years in the resort business, his name was synonymous with Madden's on Gull Lake, which he co-founded with brother Jack in the 1930s.
30 years ago (1991)
Former county sheriff Frank Ball confirmed that he will seek the post of Brainerd police chief, now that Ralph Hitchens has retired. Ball is currently serving as administrator of the NET VI Drug Task Force. If Ball does get the chief's position, both he and Sheriff Dick Ross – who competed in a spirited battle for sheriff – say they can work together amicably.
