The tentative co-main for Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni YIldirim tonight is no longer tentative. Abraham “Choko” Rodriguez successfully arrived in Miami and made the flyweight limit last night, clearing him to fight McWilliams Arroyo for the interim WBC flyweight title after Julio Cesar Martinez’s withdrawal.

Rodriguez (27-2, 13 KO), a 26-year-old fighting out of Tijuana, generally spends his time at either minimumweight or light flyweight; he’s ranked 4th at 108 by the IBF, which would theoretically put him in position for a final eliminator to face Felix Alvarado since the top two spots are empty, and he sits at #15 and #3 in the WBC’s and WBO’s 105-pound rankings, respectively.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez sat down with ESPN KnockOut yesterday to discuss the company’s upcoming plans, revealing a number of interesting tidbits. He confirmed that something would be announced “very soon” regarding the WBA-mandated trilogy match between Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney, claimed he’s discussed Patrick Teixeira and Vergil Ortiz Jr potentially facing Terence Crawford, and said there’s a “very good chance” that IBF super featherweight champ Joseph Diaz Jr. fights WBA “world” champ Roger Gutierrez next if the former defeats Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov next week.

One of arguably the two best light flyweights in the world, WBA “super” champion Hiroto Kyoguchi, will reportedly make his U.S. debut in two months. Both Fernando Barbosa and Asian Boxing report that Kyoguchi will face 20-year-old former minimumweight title challenger Axel Aragon on March 13th as part of the Juan Francisco Estrada-Roman Gonzalez 2 undercard.
Kyoguchi (14-0, 9 KO), out of action since an October 2019 decision over veteran countryman Tetsuya Hisada, was supposed to face another wunderkind in Thanongsak Simsri last November. Unfortunately, Kyoguchi tested positive for COVID shortly after weigh-ins, and Simsri reportedly declined the March 13th date due to travel issues.
