FASTag is becoming mandatory starting today. Everyone who has a road trip on the cards will need a FASTag for their car in order to cross toll plaza s across national highways. The deadline today is an extended deadline from the previous January 1 deadline put in place by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. FASTag s are meant to enable contactless toll payments across national highways in the country and can be issued via multiple banks including HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, Paytm Payments Bank and IDFC First Bank, to name a few. FASTag payments option has already been enabled at more than 720 toll plazas on national highways across India.

New Delhi: The automatic toll plaza payment system FASTag has become mandatory from February 15. People driving vehicles that do not have the tag yet would have to pay a fee equivalent to two times the usual charge at toll plazas.
The extra charge will apply to vehicles even if the tag is present but not working due to insufficient balance or any other reason.
In a notification released on Sunday, the central government said that all fee lanes in toll plazas on National Highways will be able to read the tags from February 15.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said the deadline for implementation of FASTag would not be extended further, and the vehicle owners should immediately adopt the e-payment facilty.
FASTags, which facilitate electronic payment of fee at toll plazas, was introduced in 2016. Making the tags compulsory would also help in ensuring that vehicles pass seamlessly through the toll plazas, as the fee payment would be done electronically.
