RUSSELLVILLE - El Dorado won the girls’ 4x100 relay Wednesday at the 5A State Track & Field Championships. The Lady Wildcats finished fourth in the team standings with 48 points behind Lake Hamilton (86), Russellville (79) and Vilonia (61).
In most sports, looking ahead is a bad idea. High school track and field isn’t most sports.
El Dorado coach John Koonce has led the Lady Wildcats to back-to-back 5A state championships. This week isn’t the state meet but the state meet is what’s on Koonce’s mind as El Dorado travels to Lake Hamilton on Tuesday for the 5A South Conference Championships.
He’s not alone.
Zyron Brock finished in the top-4 in six individual events at last year’s 5A State Track & Field Championships, including state titles in the 400 and long jump. An injury has hampered her start to the 2024 season. The junior has high hopes for a fast finish as the Lady Wildcats look for a third straight championship.
Sophomore Zyron Brock scored a whopping 47 points to lead El Dorado to its second straight 5A State Girls Track & Field Championship. Scoring in six individual events, she was named Sports Alley/News-Times Spring Sports Female Athlete of the Year.
