A former IPS officer, Lalduhomas Zoram People’s Movement has become the first party other than the Congress or the Mizo National Front (MNF) to be voted into power in the state since the formation of Mizoram in 1987.
The Zoram People’s Movement chief served as Indira Gandhi’s security in-charge before he quit IPS to join politics in 1984. In 1988, he became the first MP to be disqualified under the anti-defection law after resigning from the Congress.
The MNF has a vote bank of around 30 per cent in Mizoram. Though ZPM, which got around 22 per cent votes in the last election, is an emerging party, the votes of Congress are likely to play a crucial role in deciding the next government
