A New Twist on A Hanukkah Tradition

Beloit s Jewish community stays connected online, finds historical significance in holidays

BELOIT—The meaning and historical significance in celebrating the holidays this year is especially profound, local Jewish community leaders say, as their congregation has stayed in touch online. Rabbi Shlomo Wing of Congregation B’Nai Abraham said in some ways, the Jewish community feels more connected than ever before. “There’s a lot of themes that kind of tie together,” Wing said, adding Hanukkah is usually celebrated at home. “So in a lot of ways we’re doing something different by reaching out to people for a Zoom Hanukkah.” Hanukkah is an eight-day commemoration of rededicating the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of limited oil that burned for eight days, Wing said. Families celebrate by lighting each candle of a menorah.
