7 Oregon wineries promote diversity, one barrel at a time

Can seven barrels of wine change the Oregon wine industry? Seven local wineries hope their One Barrel Challenge starts a conversation about accessibility and inclusivity to answer that question.
The One Barrel Challenge is seven wineries, each selling a barrel’s worth of wine for an important cause: diversity. The wineries plan on using the money to make their industry more accessible to people of all colors, races and creeds. Their efforts could generate over $100,000, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Maurice Lucas Foundation.

“It’s super white, but it’s changing,” said Frye.
“When you describe the wine industry, it’s white right? For us to make the best wine […] we would be doing a disservice to say we are, if we’re not getting the perspective of everyone,” he said.
A first step
The One Barrel Challenge is meant to be a first step in getting to that inclusive goal.
“Overall, we’re trying to highlight and bring to life more opportunities and the barrier of entry for people of color into the wine industry,” said Gray.
In the vast world of wine, Gray said there aren’t many people of color heading up their own brands.
