NUNDWE: Requested K272 million for providing security at Bingu Field Hospital at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe for three months
Expenditure reports on the K6.2 billion Covid-19 response funds whose accountability is under scrutiny indicate that the bulk of the resources were spent on allowances and logistics compared to essential services such as supplies to hospital.
The reports further show duplication of activities and by extension costs among the 15 Covid-19 clusters under the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma).
The expenditure trend for September to December 2020 on the watch of President Lazarus Chakwera and Tonse Alliance appears similar to that of April to June 2020 under president Peter Mutharika and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as published by The Nation yesterday.
A case in which a 30-year-old Kasungu man Emmanuel Shawa allegedly defiled and murdered his six-year-old daughter has stalled.
Kasungu police spokesperson, Edna Mzingwitsa, said the case has stalled after Shawa was diagnosed with mental disorder and is being treated at Zomba Mental Hospital.
Mzingwitsa said the case will resume once the accused recovers.
The suspect allegedly defiled his child before killing her with a hammer.
Upon being questioned, Shawa told his wife that he had killed a chicken, a response that raised a lot of questions on his mental wellbeing.
He was later arrested and taken for mental illness examination at Kasungu District Hospital where results indicated that he has mental disorder.

So, what is Mental Health exactly? Put it simply, Mental health is a good state of the mind. A healthy mind and mental well-being. When the mind is not healthy then it becomes an illness.
Dr. Precious Makiyi
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, generally refers to a wide range of mental health conditions disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior.
Examples of mental illness can be varied but generally they include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours.
Many Malawians just like everyone else, have mental health concerns from time to time. However, a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function.
