Trinity, N.C. Despite losing the opening set, McMichael came together and secured its spot in the third round of the 2A state playoffs.
The Phoenix went on the road and took down Wheatmore in four sets. McMichael won 22-25, 29-27, 25-13, and 25-20 in round two, which sets up an away clash with Carrboro over the weekend.
McMichael was getting the better of Wheatmore to start set one. The Phoenix jumped out to an 8-4 lead after senior outside hitter and Auburn University signee Cassie Tanton delivered an ace towards the far-left corner. Wheatmore managed to stay within a few points as the game rolled on.
