CLEVELAND – Saturday s match-up between Utah lacrosse and Cleveland State showed great promise for what s to come between the two future ASUN opponents as Utah held on for the 11-9 road victory thanks to a late 3-0 run and 15 saves from keeper Zion Dechesere inside the Krenzler Bubble.
Ryan Rogers broke the seal to open scoring for both teams after lunging towards the crease and snuck one past the Cleveland State keeper at the 11:26 mark. The Vikings answered right back to tie things up at the 10:15 mark and from that point on neither team scored despite CSU continually attacking the Utah defense. Utah s offense finally broke through after Sammy Cambere connected with Josh Rose for a huge strike down field. Utah (4-6) extended the lead to 3-1 with 30 ticks left in the first quarter when Tyler Bradbury found Jonathan Rose on the far side of the field.

SALT LAKE CITY A low-scoring defensive battle at Crimson Field went the way of the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins, who came out with an 8-3 victory over Utah in the Utes home opener Saturday.
The defensive effort yielded the second-lowest scoring output by a Utah opponent this season, but the three goals scored marked a season low for the Utes.
I thought we had a great week of practice, so I didn t sense it there, but we definitely didn t handle pressure really well, said head coach Brian Holman. I thought we got manhandled there a little bit. I was really proud of our defense, though. I thought defensively our athleticism shows up. That s something I knew before the year started that most of our older, more veteran, guys are on the defensive side of the ball.
Utah gave No. 5 Denver everything it had to open the 2021 college lacrosse season on Saturday.
After the Utes jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead, the Pioneers roared back in the second half to come out on top. For a team tasked with replacing its injured starting goalie Zion Dechesere as well as two starting poles plus 80% of its offensive scoring from a season ago, Utah never gave up.
When Ethan Walker found JJ Sillstrop for a behind-the-back dagger to make it 9-6, the Utes kept fighting. Unsurprised by the way his team competed and never gave up against a team with loftier expectations of getting to Championship Weekend, head coach Brian Holman spoke to IL about his biggest takeaway moving forward.
