reporter: the rhetoric here has certainly been ramped up. and there is not a lot of margin for error here. president zelenskyy last night in his nightly address made a very bold and very specific claim saying ukrainian intelligence has evidence that there are objects on the roofs of several of the power units at the power plant that have objects resembling explosive devices on them essentially suggesting that this could simulate a false flag operation. this is something similar to what the ukrainian military had said previously that any explosion would do enough damage to look like ukrainian shelling but wouldn t do enough damage to actually damage the power units themselves. this is something that ukraine has been sort of floating for a few days now. in fact they have recently started doing drills in the event of a terror attack they
length so moscow would not accuse washington of meddling in russian internal affairs and finally ukraine also has a huge stake in what was happening inside russia. we saw president zelenskyy last night. he said this was a sign of the chaos in the country and russia has to end its war. the ukrainian military launching fresh in roads into the russian front line to try to take advantage of this confusion and finally folks the big loser by most accounts this day after, vladimir putin. hired fighters running ramp about across one s country and a mercenary boss criticizing your principal war strategy. that s not a good look for a person who likes control. it is, in fact, just reported that putin went on state tv today to say that he is in constant contact with his defense officials. he is confident in the special military operation. that s what he calls his war here, and he claims he checks in on it morning, noon, and night.
the year. cnn correspondent melissa bell is following the development in kharkiv and you joins us live. out lights are back on where you are but i am sure there are plenty of other problems that that city is facing right now. what can you tell us about it? reporter: that s right. and yet it is an important symbol of this particular city s resilience. what we re seeing now is the metro is just about functioning again, the electricity returned not just to the city, but to the wider region, and that is important because what we have seen over the course of the last few days, the last few weeks, as you mentioned, according to the comments by president zelenskyy last night is aerial bombardments that are almost a daily occurrence. it s easy to forget because we pay so much attention to the fighting going on in the east, but this city is on the border with russia and, therefore, within reach of those s-300 surface to air soviet missiles that caused so much devastation.

is all about artillery and capability of reach. we have seen another example in just the past couple of days of the effectiveness of u.s.-provided weapons. that s here in kyiv and throughout the country. we have seen the style of attack where the russians have been swarming iranian-made drones, along with missiles, all over the country, but particularly here in the capital, trying to hit electricity infrastructure, civilian infrastructure. we have been going around this city looking at some of the aftermath of the damage and watching, as rescue workers tried to put the lights back on. what this really shows is that the u.s. weapons have been used to great affect in swatting down these missiles. that s what we heard from president zelenskyy last night. he said that ukrainians should be aware that russia is probably planning for what he called an extended effort or extended attack by these ukrainian drones to try to target electricity infrastructure. this has been going on since the
