first african american woman to ever sit on the u.s. supreme court. as jeff zeleny reports, some senate republicans are congratulating the nomination while others remain skeptical. for too long, our government, our courts, haven t looked like america. reporter: president biden making history today, nominating the first black woman to serve on the supreme court. ketanji brown jackson accepted it last night, now beginning the confirmation process to become a justice on the nation s highest court? i am truly humbled by the extraordinary honor of this nomination. reporter: if approved, she would follow justice breyer for whom she worked as a claw clerk. the members of the senate will decide if i fill your seat but please know that i could never fill your shoes.
president zelenskyy last night said that nato was, quote, weak and lost for not imposing a no-fly zone over ukraine. is it right? thanks, michael. good to be with you. one, nato has been providing a lot of support. they ve been providing financial support, they ve been providing lethal aid. and supporting refugees coming across the border. i understand president zelenskyy s concern, from the bind, from nato standpoint if you impose the no-fly zone then there s the potential to expand the fight rather than contain it. i can understand president zelenskyy s position but for now imposing a no-fly zone is probably the right way to go. can ukraine outright win this war? it depends how you define win. from a conventional standpoint. the russians have outmatched the ukrainians in combat power.
left their homes, leashing things behind, guilt just to keep themselves and their children safe. arwa damon, it s remarkable to see what s happening on the ground. thank you so much for showing us that this morning. ukrainian president zelenskyy had an urgent message for lawmakers that he met with on a video call yesterday making it clear ukraine needs more assistance. superb spoke with president zelenskyy last night, at least the fifth time they ve spoken since russia invaded. let s take you to delaware where president biden is spending the weekend. that s where our white house reporter kevin liptak is reporting. kevin, how has the president responded to the calls from president zelenskyy? reporter: it seems like he s getting a good reception so far. just to set this up, these are

sanctions will be effective. one argument he did make, which is notable given what white house aids and top national security officials have been saying for several weeks, he didn t believe the sanctions were going to stop putin from going forward to do what he did. we ve talked about them being a deterrence, as the white house felt they wanted to wait until putin actually went in and attacked ukraine to put these sanctions in place, as they re doing today. erin, one other thing we should note the treasury department announced they ll be sanctioning a list of individuals from belarus, including the defense minister, which is notable. for helping ukraine or helping russia with the invasion into ukraine. last night as the attack was happening, there were reports on the ground of the russian forces coming in from the border with belarus. now they have a list of individuals, i believe it s about 24 of them who are now also being sanctioned by the u.s. treasury department. the larger scale
