A day after stripping David Warner of the captaincy, Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped the opener from the team to play against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday as they seek to revive their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign under Kane Williamson.
The franchise, languishing at the bottom of the points table after just one win in their first six matches, put New Zealand’s Williamson in charge on Saturday, replacing Australian Warner who led Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016.
It comes in the same week that Warner and dozens of other Australian cricketers playing in Covid-hit India – along with other Australians based in the country – were warned that any attempt to return home before 15 May would risk jail time.
The usually free-scoring Warner rued his slow batting in their previous match against Chennai Super Kings and took “full responsibility” for the loss. His two fifties notwithstanding, the opener’s unremarkable strike rate of 110 reveals his struggle to capitalise on the new ball and fielding restrictions.

Kane Williamson s tireless quest for runs continued on Sunday as he batted New Zealand into a commanding position on the second day of the second cricket Test against Pakistan.
Williamson made 129, his 23rd Test hundred, and shared century partnerships with Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls as New Zealand made 431 batting first after losing the toss.
At stumps Pakistan was 1-30 after 20 overs with Abid Ali 19 not out and nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas 0.
Shan Masood was out for 10 just before stumps, caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper BJ Watling from the bowling of Kyle Jamieson.
In his last 10 Tests in New Zealand Williamson has made two double centuries, Sunday s century and three half centuries.
