american people elected president trump and republican majorities in both houses to shut down the government. senator flake said no, we don t need a governmental shutdown. we shouldn t change senate rules on the legislative filibuster. how does that complicate the mission for republicans in the house and in the senate? reporter: well, i mean their mission is so complicated on so many different fronts. they have to reach 60 votes on major pieces of legislation and spending bills and they don t have 60 votes and democrats are clearly not going to help them ever. it seems. it s pretty clear. some things have to give here in some way. it s just not clear at this point what it will be. zach wolf, nice to see you this morning. the u.s. auto boom might be over. has it peaked just as president trump is counting on it to add
flynn had lied to vice president mike pence about his conversations with the russian ambassador. flynn resigned that night. yates testimony on may 8th will be the first time the former acting attorney general will publicly speak about that white house meeting. source familiar with the situation said yates will be limited on what she can tell the committee because many details involving flynn remain classified. yates previously scheduled appearance in front of the house intelligence committee you may remember was cancelled by chairman nunez. that move sparking outcry from democrats who believed he was trying to shield the white house from damaging new revelations. shut, thanks. let s break this down. very busy detain washington. cnn politics digital managing editor zachary wolf is with us. you say the yates testimony will be enormous. reporter: yeah. i think so. you know, this michael flynn issue and the issue of russian contacts keeps coming back again and again to this white house
ossoff. less bring in the managing editor of cnn politics digital zachary wolf. good morning to you, zach. looking at the lay of the land here in georgia, no decisive winner in this highly-anticipated special election. why it is that both sides are saying hey, we won? well, republicans are saying it s a good thing for them that there s not going to be a new democrat headed to congress and democrats are saying it s a good thing for them that there s somebody who got nearly 50%, a democrat in this reliably republican district. i think republicans should look at the results here. i mean they should be happy, i think that ossoff didn t get to 50% but there s some warning bells too. this is a reliably republican place and if this had happened little bit less reliably ybe a republican there might be a democrat headed to congress right now. i think that there are clearly some frustrations with the white house and with republicans that they need to take northeast going forward.
it seems like a sugar coat to call it disappointing and potentially not devastating for the caucus. i think many times in congress and nothing is really ever dead ever. but paul ryan unlike some people in the trump camp might want to see him fail. let s think 2020, the two biggest republicans in town, vice president mike pence, speaker ryan, if he wildly succeeds and if he s seen as the leader, he could be a threat to president trump. all right. talk about the primary. lynn sweet, errol lewis, zachary wolf, thank you all. ukrainian officials convinced russia was behind a shocking murder that happened in broad daylight. the question this morning, was the victim targeted because he criticized the kremlin? we have a live report from moscow for you, next. plus humilitating catastrophe. catching heat from the right wing media. what the criticism means for the
pretend that this has not been a central, central calling card of the republicans and they couldn t get it done. they couldn t figure out not just consensus, they couldn t figure out a way to have a path forward that even could strip off a few democrats just in case. that s what legislatures do. the only number that counts, that counted friday was 216 votes. everybody knew that going in. it was a big learning curve for the president and that is going to be not ignored by people in these districts who did say we sent you to repeal obamacare and you couldn t do that. much less a replacement which is why this is going to be so important as to whether or not the trump administration is willing to mend it as it goes along. so, zachary, let s talk about that point. this becomes less and less likely and the closer you get you get to the midterms.
