It s not hard to get Gene Crosset talking about passenger rail, but don t call him a train nut. He prefers the title foamer. It comes from the foaming at the mouth when we see trains, Crosset said.
For decades, Crosset, a 78-year-old living in Davenport, has seen plans for an Iowa City-to-Chicago passenger rail line become a perennial conversation, only to disappear like a train heading into a tunnel.
The possibility exists again, after Amtrak released a map this month featuring new and enhanced lines, part of the $80 billion President Joe Biden designated for rail in his American Jobs Plan. The map included one bright blue line that dog-legged west from Chicago through Moline with a terminus in Iowa City.

Bobby Schilling, a former Illinois Congressman and Republican contender for Iowa s 2nd Congressional District, died Tuesday from complications related to cancer, according to a tweet from his son. The Press-Citizen first reported on Schilling s diagnosis in May 2020, amid his campaign for the Republican nomination in a contested primary with now-U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. I went in for a checkup with my doctor. They noticed some irregularities and performed some tests. Today, we got the results we were told to expect: cancer, he said in a statement at the time.

On Wednesday, a congressional committee punted a motion to dismiss Democrat Rita Hart’s election contest of the result of Iowa s 2nd Congressional District election in November before first considering the merits of her appeal.
The committee vote fell on party lines, but not before members of both parties made overtures about the implications of any potential investigation the committee might launch into the race.
“The margin separating the two candidates was only six votes out of almost 400,000 cast: less than 1/6 of 1%. That s six votes not 6,000; not 600; not 60 or even 16 just six fewer votes than we have members of this committee,” Chair Zoe Lofgren, D-California, told committee members. “… It should not be surprising that any candidate in these circumstances
