First on 13. Were waking up to the calm before the storm today. And that first significant snowfall of the year is creating a guessing game for some plow drivers this morning. We just kinda plan for the worst and go from that. But planning for the worst for the dot so far has not included pre treating any of the roadways. Warm temperatures and rainfall expected. Makes it a waste of time and money. But they say foregoing the salt back to haunt them. The snow can turn to ice and in that case, they say everything has been tested and is ready to go. Unlike the dot. The Des Moines Public Works Department thinks pretreating the roads will help. A dozen antiicing trucks hit the roads yesterday. Theyve also altered some of their snow routes to match school bus routes. In hopes it will improve safety for drivers trying to get kids home from school. Waking up to cloudy skies and cold temperatures in the 20s this morning. A few snow showers are still occurring in far Northern Iowa this morning. There is a winter storm warning still in effect in Northern Iowa through 6 am. Temperatures will not warm up much. Highs will only reach the upper 20s. There is another chance for some light snow again early wednesday morning, as a weak disturbance passes through iowa drivers will want to take their time during the morning commute. As you can see, all highways and interstates are at least partially covered with snow and ice. But the worst conditions are found in the southeastern part of the state. Thats where the roads are completely covered. Blowing snow is also expected. Here in the metro. Snow plows are out on the streets around the clock. It takes a lot of people.
