A summer highlight in Des Moines County is the annual Outdoor Youth Jamboree at Big Hollow Recreation Area, but COVID-19 sidelined that for this year.
No worries: conservation director Chris Lee told county supervisors and department heads the event will be replaced with an open house including a scavenger hunt May 15. We re going to have canoe rentals, we ll have some fishing poles you can borrow, Lee said.
Fill the Lake Flotilla
May 15 will include the new Fill the Lake Flotilla, which Lee said is similar to a flotilla in the Quad Cities area.

A ginger cat named Tyson had been waiting for his forever home for six years at a northern York County animal shelter. A Fawn Grove couple fell in love with their new child after seeing his post on Petfinder.
The red tabby, with a white bib and matching white mittens, tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) when he first arrived at the The Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. animal shelter in Franklin Township.
“FIV cats are often overlooked because of the stigma attached to their disease,” said Alex Holden, the shelter manager. She goes on to say that over the past 10 years there has become a better understanding of what the virus means for adopting a pet and that cats that test positive can live “pretty long, healthy lives.”

WAPELLO Louisa County residents now can provide input that will be used to update the county’s 20-year comprehensive plan, and members of the Louisa County Planning and Zoning Commission got their chance Thursday during the commission’s monthly meeting.
Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission Assistant Director Zach James and regional planner Jordan Frahm guided the LCPZC members through an online survey, with the members anonymously responding to each survey question through their smartphone or another device.
James pointed out the survey had been posted on the SEIRPC’s Facebook page and was mailed directly to 980 randomly selected addresses in the county about two weeks ago. He said about 150 of the surveys that were directly mailed have been returned for various reasons, which the SEIRPC staff will investigate.
