Stopping General Iron is just the start of fixing environmental problems on the Southeast Side

Pat Nabong/Sun-Times We agree with the Sun-Times’ recent editorial on General Iron that something must be changed so that future decisions regarding pollution and environmental justice are able to be made more quickly and in consideration of impacted residents. As the editorial noted, the proposed relocation of General Iron’s recycling facility from Lincoln Park, a majority white neighborhood, to the Calumet Industrial Corridor, which is majority Hispanic/Latinx and Black, caused a great public outcry and inspired a month-long hunger strike by several residents in protest. While we are pleased that Mayor Lori Lightfoot and U.S. EPA Administrator Michael Regan finally listened to community members who fought to stop the General Iron project, the proposed facility is the most recent in a long line of environmental injustices along the Calumet River that need to be addressed.

Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times About 100 protesters gathered outside the Chicago Housing Authority offices Monday morning, demanding better funding for the city’s Black communities. “Cut us in or cut it out!” they chanted. “We want funding in this city, county and state to be prioritized for the most marginalized people in this city, county and state: Black people,” said Bamani Obadele, an organizer with Don’t Count Us Out. Don’t Count Us Out led the May Day Movement March at 60 E. Van Buren St., demanding, among other things, that Chicago create an Office of North American Descendants of Slaves to address economic disparities for Black communities.

Illinois universities plan in-person commencements — and 2020 grads are invited, too

Provided Annie Czerwinski is eagerly awaiting a chance to walk the stage in a cap and gown in a commencement ceremony at the University of Illinois next month something that she has been anticipating for years. Czerwinski, however, has been waiting longer than most students taking part in such events this spring: She actually got her degree in molecular and cellular biology last May. But because the pandemic canceled last year’s in-person commencement, the state’s flagship school is allowing any 2020 graduate to come to the campus in Urbana-Champaign and be recognized along with 2021 grads. “Honestly, it was really sad,” Czerwinski said of missing out on a formal in-person program last year. “I had been looking forward to commencement for so long.”
