Why is it that I find Sgt. Frog so interesting when almost all other manga comedies do nothing for me? I think the tail end of Chapter 151 offers a pretty good answer: in the chapter’s last few pages, Yoshizaki spends a few frames lingering on a single shot as part of a comedic build-up before the inevitable punch line. Precious few comedy manga series have a sense of timing that’s anywhere near this good.

Animal Academy is a series that’s really starting to grow on me. I like pleasant, low-key stories, and Animal Academy is nothing if not pleasant and low-key. The question was whether or not it will be a particularly good pleasant, low-key story. After seeing what it could do with this volume and a little of the last, I think it is. There aren’t as many introductions to be made in this second volume of Animal Academy, but apart from that, this volume is much like the first. It has a story, and the story is going somewhere, but it’s taking its own sweet time about it. This may turn away some readers, but I’m finding the series a refreshing one to turn to. It’s just so…so pleasant.
