Summer recreation programs return | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN The city’s parks and recreation summer programs, shut down in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, are moving ahead this year. The city’s summer camp program will be June 7 to Aug. 6 with early registration starting today. Registration is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the summer camp office, 3025 South Ave. A registration event will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 at Wick Park with extended registrations at locations throughout the city May 17 to 21. Reservations for pavilion rentals will begin May 3 in person, by appointment only, at the parks and recreation office on the first floor of city hall. Call the department at 330-742-8711 or email parks@youngstownohio.gov to make an appointment.

Jan 11, 2021 POVERTY AWARENESS: “Poverty Awareness: Seeking Solutions in the Mahoning Valley” will take place 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday via Zoom hosted by the ACTION Clergy Caucus. The program will be a discussion of poverty with biblical reflections, faith-based principles, local perspectives and solutions, and steps for a better community. Speakers include Bishop Alice Parkman of Christ’s Dwelling Place, Terry Vicars of Catholic Charities Regional Agency, Elder Beau Fowler of Elizabeth Baptist Missionary, Derrick McDowell of Youngstown Flea, and Tawnya Scott Bourne of Dress to Succeed. Dec 17, 2020 KSU VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT: The Kent State University alumni family will grow by more than 2,500 new graduates as the university holds its fall commencement. The accomplishments of the fall class of 2020 will be recognized with a virtual commencement recognition ceremony 11 a.m. Saturday, in accordance with Gov. Mike DeWine’s order to prohibit mass gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, 2,552 degrees will be conferred, consisting of 590 associate degrees, 1,572 bachelor’s degrees, 353 master’s degrees, 35 doctoral degrees and two educational specialist degrees. FOOD GIVEAWAY: Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., Youngstown, will have a food giveaway 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Food will be distributed until it runs out.
