Area schools cancel classes due to staff, student absences

Graham ISD, Olney ISD and Open Door Christian School canceled classes this week due to an excessive number of absences from staff and students. GISD made the announcement Wednesday, Jan. 24 to cancel classes Thursday, Jan. 25. The following day Friday, Jan. 26, was a previously scheduled non-school day and, as of Thursday, classes were scheduled to resume Monday, Jan. 29.

Anderson accepts plea in Niko animal cruelty case

One of two men involved in the case of Niko, an abused dog who garnered support from the community, was convicted and arrested today. Zackery Anderson was sentenced to 100 days in the Young County Jail after accepting a plea in county court this week for the March 2023 offense of animal cruelty. The charge was related to Niko, a Dogo Argentino dog, which was surrendered to the Humane Society of Young County.

Filing opens tomorrow in May election | The Graham Leader

The filing period in Young County opens tomorrow for political subdivision seats up for election in May. City council and school board positions in Graham, Olney and Newcastle are up for election with applications available at each individual entity. The filing period opened Wednesday, Jan. 17 across the state. Applications to file can be submitted to local political subdivisions through Friday, Feb. 16. The election will take place Saturday, May 4 at polling locations around Young County.
