The New York State Education Department is setting a first-ever deadline for New York City to finish its investigations into dozens of ultra-Orthodox religious schools within six months. Commissioner of Education Betty Rosa told local officials they have until the last day of June to complete “detailed determinations/recommendations” about the quality of secular instruction at the yeshivas.
The principal of Yeshiva Mesivta Arugath Habosem in Williamsburg says the school will develop “curriculum maps” to teach math, science, English, social studies and other subjects. An education expert was skeptical, telling The News the proposal “could have been written on a napkin during a quick lunch.”
