The New York State Education Department is setting a first-ever deadline for New York City to finish its investigations into dozens of ultra-Orthodox religious schools within six months. Commissioner of Education Betty Rosa told local officials they have until the last day of June to complete “detailed determinations/recommendations” about the quality of secular instruction at the yeshivas.
The regulations, which lay out a path for defining and enforcing a state law requiring private schools to offer an education “substantially equivalent” to that at public schools, got the approval of the Regents’ Preschool to 12th grade committee Monday, and will go to the whole board for a vote Tuesday.
The proposed regulations are already drawing criticism from advocates on both sides of the debate with yeshiva critics arguing they won’t do enough to force the schools to beef up secular education and supporters claiming they will infringe on the schools’ ability to provide religious instruction.
