scrambling to try to fix the problem as we mentioned earlier new york is in the middle of a tornado warning and we don t get those every day. rick leventhal is live on the scene. hi, rick. reporter: martha, we re right in the middle of west 57th. this is a major east/west crosstown thoroughfare and it s shut down between sixth and seventh avenues and you can see why that yellow box dangling about 20 stories above the street. we re told that s a concrete square, seven tons of concrete that may in fact be a counterweight to the crane that s holding it. there is the crane that malfunctioned earlier this morning at the top of the building. the apartments in this luxury condominium being built where the crane is, $90 million for a penthouse apartment in that building. the crane malfunctioned at some point this morning, they stopped the counterweight from it being
for gusts will continue as the storm moves east and associated cold prompt is going to bring the potential for heavy rainfall, as well. look at the mess of showers and thunderstorms across the eastern half of the country, near thunderstorm watches in effect for all of this area in the yellow box until 9:00 p.m. local time and we have severe thunderstorm warnings dotted all around the area so certainly keep an eye to the sky and an ear to color local forecast watching the radar over the next 12 to 24 hours, this moisture is going to move eastward and it will be mainly a northeast threat as we get into tomorrow s drive in, toward the mid-day and look at the rainfall we will see on saturated ground. some of the areas already are seeing flooding so this is just going to add more insult to injury unfortunately across the eastern part of the country. the drought monitor shows we do not need anymore rain across the eastern half of the country but the area that needs it the most is the western
significant sized hail and some very strong straightline winds. so, in the st. louis area, you are not out of the woods and the weather map there on the the big yellow box is an area for extreme thunderstorms, severe thunderstorms. and the red boxes are tornado warnings. let s listen in to local coverage in st. louis where they are giving a heads uñ to locals there. with the radar and show you what is going on. there is the bow right in there. again, i-70 north and to the east of 55 right now. it is approaching highway 51 in illinois. so here is 51. there is 70. there is 55. the most severe weather is right boxed in there. the severe squall line and anywhere along the front edge of that line is where we can get these spinup tornadoes which is why you are under a tornado warning right now. and these are now becoming what
