Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has been knighted in the Queen s New Year Honours list.

British Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has been knighted as part of Queen Elizabeth II s New Year Honour s list. The 35-year-old Mercedes F1 Team driver equalled Michael Schumacher s record of seven world championship titles this year.
Hamilton sealed the championship back in November, after also breaking and surpassing the German s record for most number of Grand Prix wins throughout his Formula 1 career. Schumacher had a long-standing record of 91 race victories, but Hamilton smashed that record this year by ending the season at 95 victories.
One-hundred-and-fifty-four people from a variety of sectors including education, sport, health, and science have been honoured.
Actor Peter Elliott says being made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit feels like it’s “validated” his life’s work. Elliott has worked in theatre and on screen since 1980. He was made an officer for services to the performing arts and also baseball. His long career on television started out with appearances on
McPhail and Gadsby, but it was the entertainment show

A former Mayor of Oldham, described as a “unique character”, is stepping down as a borough councillor.
Colourful John Hudson OBE, aged 81, from Greenfield, will not stand in next May’s elections.
He currently represents the Saddleworth South Ward.
Cllr Graham Sheldon will take over the leadership of the Conservative group on the borough council and at 19, Max Woodvine will lead Saddleworth Parish Council Conservatives in addition to standing in an election for a seat on the borough council which will be created by Cllr Hudson’s vacated ward seat.
However, Cllr Hudson will continue to serve as a Saddleworth parish councillor, representing Greenfield, Grasscroft, Lydgate and Friezland, until 2023.
