Image: Supplied Nomzamo Buthelezi, a member of the Stellenbosch University SRC was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on Sunday, the institution announced. “Information available to the university is that Ms Buthelezi passed away after suffering injuries caused by an alleged hit-and-run incident in Merriman Avenue, Stellenbosch. Ms Buthelezi, a BSc student from Gauteng, resided in a senior residence on campus,” the university said. Dr Choice Makhetha, who is the senior director of student affairs, said they were devastated by Buthelezi’s death. “The circumstances surrounding her death forms part of the investigation of the SA Police Service and the university does not wish to comment on this for now, but we do urge the police, as a matter of urgency, to make sure that the guilty parties are brought to book,” Makhetha said.

One student asked: “Are you for the students or are you for management?” Another said: “There are students not registered; students that are not recognised as SU students… why is it a challenge to lift the block [now]?” Evidently, some were not pleased with the institution’s response or the SRC efforts to help alleviate financial anxiety. About 543 Stellenbosch University students are unable to register because of debt, and some of their fees will be paid by the Action 4 Inclusion initiative. Nomzamo Buthelezi, the SRC’s societies council chairperson and policy officer, said the remainder of the 543 students not covered by the initiative would be referred to the university’s Student Debt Task Team. However, all 543 students’ debt would be cleared by the close of registration.

Madonsela herself has pledged R27 000 to the Maties student funding initiative. The initiative s first goal is to raise R2 million, owed from 2019, to help students register by March 15. The second target is R2.7m by April 27 and the final target is R10m by June 16 for 2020 debt. “This year marks 27 years of healing the divisions of the past and freeing the potential of all. As unemployment and poverty explode, we do not want angry young people seething over stolen dreams,” said Madonsela.
