Fusarium TR4 fungus puts Ecuador on high alert
As the world’s number one banana exporter, Ecuador is on high alert for its vital crop as its neighbor Peru is grappling with an outbreak of a fungus deadly to that particular crop. Ecuador is sandwiched between two South American nations that have a presence of the incurable banana affliction, with the fungus first reaching Colombia in 2019. Ecuador has plantations less than 300 kilometers from the northern Peru region where the fungus was confirmed on April 12.
After confirming with Peru’s government of an outbreak of the Fusarium TR4 fungus, which causes the devastating banana wilt, near its southern border with Peru, Agriculture Minister Xavier Lazo stated that emergency measures were taken.
Flower growers from the town of Lasso export roses to Spain
The shipment was made by the company Naranjo Roses Ecuador, which in November last year signed an agreement with Impoex & Real Cimex of Spain, establishing a long-term strategic alliance to produce and export preserved roses from the Lulu Rose plant, in the sector of Lasso, towards the European country.
“It is a great message for everyone who makes the company, for the workers’ families, for the community, but above all for the country,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Xavier Lazo, who participated in the shipment of these products with added value, which benefits 400 families of farmers who are dedicated to the production of flowers in the sector.
Small banana producers receive certification of regularization of their properties
Last September the reform to the regulation of the Law to Stimulate and Control the Production and Marketing of Bananas was issued, through which the regularization of producers is allowed and in December, through Ministerial Agreement 156, the payment of the fine for small producers of up to 5 hectares.
“With the formalization we will have union associations capable of reaching a direct market and facilities to achieve price stability,” said Minister Xavier Lazo.
Gladys Fuentes Alegría, producer of the Lorenzo de Garaicoa parish, indicated that with the certification she will be able to do her formalities as a formal producer and will allow her to market the fruit at a fair price. She, along with 13 other producers, received her code to enter the MAG’s Banana Control System.
