Historic Ellport cabin burned in weekend fire

Ellwood City Ledger ELLPORT Over 200 years of local history were nearly lost Saturday night when a once-hidden log cabin in the borough caught fire.  The Wurtemburg-Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call about the fire on Grim Avenue at 7:42 p.m. to find the historic building, along with a nearby shed and car, ablaze. An unattended burning of papers in a burn barrel caused the fire, which took about 10 minutes to get under control.   Assistant Chief Brian Patridge said the only real structural damage to the cabin was to the roof. It s heavy timbers, large and old, contained a number of cracks throughout them. The fire burned deep into those cracks and rendered the roof unstable. Though other damage was less severe, restoration is likely an impossibility.
