Taipei, March 14 (CNA) Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) completed a 24-hour scooter ride from his city in northern Taiwan to Kenting in southern Taiwan s Pingtung County on Saturday evening, a challenge he undertook to promote tourism and upcoming events in his city.
The mayor was invited to partake in the challenge by the Keelung Vespa Owners Club, which is organizing a large-scale meetup of Vespa riders this September.

Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) A traffic jam was seen in Taipingshan in Yilan County, as tourists flocked to the mountain to see the snow, the scenic area administration in northeastern Taiwan reported Saturday.
The Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area had to block tourists from entering as more than 1,000 vehicles had lined up since early morning, resulting in a 6-kilometer-long backup from the gate, said its official Huang Hsin-wei (黃信偉).
Cold front brings snow to Taipingshan in Yilan

Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) Snow fell on Taipingshan in Yilan County on Thursday, as a cold front arrived in the country, according to the Luodong Forest District Office.
Huang Hsin-wei (黃信偉), one of the park s managers, said snow began falling around 6:40 p.m. at Cueifong Villa, 1,900 meters above sea level, in the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area.
Earlier in the day, weather expert Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said the cold spell, coupled with heavy moisture, was likely to result in snowfalls at altitudes of over 2,000 meters in the northern half of Taiwan, including on Hehuanshan, Xueshan, Nanhushan, Taipingshan and Lalashan, from late Thursday into early Friday.

Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) The family of a Taiwanese fishing boat captain who went missing along with nine crew members off Midway Atoll last week urged President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Thursday to request that the American authorities step up search-and-rescue efforts in the vicinity of the remote U.S. territory.
During a press conference at the Su ao Fishermen s Association, the wife of the missing captain, who has been identified by the surname Li (李), accused the U.S. of adopting a passive approach to locating her husband and the ship s Indonesian crew members, and urged Tsai to seek assistance through diplomatic channels.
