Earth Day: Travel retail shows its colours on sustainability
April 21, 2021
Brands including Mondelez and Mars are looking to offer more sustainable products and packaging, while retailers such as ARI are revamping their approach
As
Earth Day pushes sustainability to the top of the agenda, travel retail companies are rushing to show their own sustainable credentials and innovations.
The focus for this year’s event is ‘Restore Our Earth’, with a focus on innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.
Sustainability has been a big talking point in the travel retail sector for the last few years, but – like so many other trends – its importance has been amplified by the pandemic.
Mondelez and CircleSquare unveil scorecard for sustainable packaging
Mondelez World Travel Retail and
CircleSquare have revealed a sustainable design scorecard for packaging in the travel retail industry.
The
Sustainable DNA Rating scorecard gives packaging a rating out of five across four key criteria: Recyclability, Reusability, Manufacture & Availability and End of Life.
The scorecard was born out of a collaboration between Mondelez and CircleSquare looking at the impact of the confectionery brand’s retail units and seeking to make them more sustainable. The new framework now informs the company’s plans going forward and they have released into the market for other travel retail brands to use.
