12:14 a.m.: The National Weather Service says 10.3 inches of snow fell Monday at the Des Moines International Airport.

Provided Monday s snowstorm is as severe as expected, winter 2020-21 is on track to be the snowiest in Des Moines in at least five years.
The storm could bring 10 to 14 inches of snow to Des Moines. By Tuesday, even the minimum forecast by the National Weather Service 7 inches would put it ahead of the total for three of the four winters preceding this one. After that, just average snowfall in February, March and April would put it ahead of the very snowy winter of 2018-19, when Des Moines saw a total of 48.8 inches, according to National Weather Service records.

While some central Iowa schools are canceling classes or starting late on Tuesday because of snow, Des Moines Public Schools will hold classes virtually.
Saydel and West Des Moines school districts join DMPS in holding classes virtually.
Meanwhile, the Ankeny, Johnston and Southeast Polk school systems all announced Tuesday morning that they were was canceling all classes for the day. Other schools that are cancelling include:
