(Courtesy of Friends of Wood Memorial Library & Museum) SOUTH WINDSOR, CT We return again to an amazing picture book entitled Images of America: South Windsor, compiled in 2017 by Claire Lobdell for the Wood Memorial Library & Museum. The book, containing 128 pages of fascinating photos from the town s history, is available for purchase at the library s museum store here. On page 77, we find a circa 1870 photo of a schoolhouse on Dart Hill Rd. Erected in 1860 to replace an earlier school building on the same site, the one-room structure served as a school until Wapping Grammar School opened in 1953.

In the mid-1930s, Ellsworth Memorial High School was built at 1737 Main Street, on the site of the former Theological Institute of Connecticut. It was named for Erastus Ellsworth, a trustee and original treasurer of the institute. The high school served students from both South Windsor and East Windsor. In the above photo, taken in 1949, members of the school s glee club are pictured in front of the building.

Last year, FOX61’s Keith McGilvery got to experience a very special tradition. For 10 years, The Wood Memorial Library & Museum has been home to a gingerbread festival, but this year. it looks a little different. “It’s a huge thing we’ve done obviously now for ten years,” said Jamie Howe from The Wood Memorial Library & Museum. “So, we are very excited to have it, we’ve got about 70 homes on display this year.”
