(Courtesy of Friends of Wood Memorial Library & Museum) SOUTH WINDSOR, CT We return again to an amazing picture book entitled Images of America: South Windsor, compiled in 2017 by Claire Lobdell for the Wood Memorial Library & Museum. The book, containing 128 pages of fascinating photos from the town s history, is available for purchase at the library s museum store here. On page 77, we find a circa 1870 photo of a schoolhouse on Dart Hill Rd. Erected in 1860 to replace an earlier school building on the same site, the one-room structure served as a school until Wapping Grammar School opened in 1953.

The book, containing 128 pages of fascinating photos from the town s history, is available for purchase at the library s museum store here. In the mid-1930s, Ellsworth Memorial High School was built at 1737 Main Street, on the site of the former Theological Institute of Connecticut. It was named for Erastus Ellsworth, a trustee and original treasurer of the institute. The high school served students from both South Windsor and East Windsor. In the above photo, taken in 1949, members of the school s glee club are pictured in front of the building.
