An orange flow from the fire is visible from the shearer s quarters at Muzzle station at 4am on Thursday morning, where principal rural fire officer Chris Hayles tries to get some shut-eye with two helicopter pilots.
“It’s looking pretty good at this stage. There were no crews onsite [on Thursday night], by 5pm all the helicopters were sent home.”
The mountainbike park and the upper walking tracks had been closed to protect recreational users, the spokesman said. Signs had been installed at several entry points to reinforce the message. People were strongly advised not enter the closed areas, and use only the Lower Farm Track, Mapp Track, the town boundary or Taylor River Reserve tracks in the early morning.

Fire and Emergency NZ has advised Marlborough District Council this afternoon that the fire danger on the Wither Hills Farm Park is now ‘Extreme’.
The temperature in the Blenheim area is 36C (at 3.00pm) and could rise further today.
All upper tracks in the Wither Hills Farm Park remain closed. The Mountain Bike Park and all of the Wither Hills Farm Park, except for the lower tracks, are closed in the interests of public safety.

There has been little relief for South Islanders with another day of record-breaking temperatures with the mercury topping 36C in Blenheim.
It s not just the South Island either today, with some parts of the North also creeping above 30C.
For the first time since 1954, Christchurch topped 35C two days in a row, according to Metservice.
Blenheim also hit 36.1C at 4pm, smashing its January temperature record set in 1972.
