He is a certified radiologist jazz musician, and former , president of Cornell University and university of iowa. He has interest in learning as wide as the smithsonian, and, most importantly tonight, he is a pescatarian. How they work and how theyre made. I love American History tv. The presidency. American artifacts, fantastic shows. I had no idea they did history. Thats probably something i would really enjoy. And with American History tv, it gives you that perspective. Im a cspan fan. Nina allender was the political cartoonist for the National Womens party from 1914 until 1927, contributing over 150 cartoons supporting the campaign for womens suffrage. Next we visit the National Monument to see her work. My name is Jennifer Krafcik and i am the Deputy Director at the belmont paul National Monument which was formerly the Belmont House and museum on capitol hill in washington, d. C. This house was the fifth and final headquarters of the National Womens party. The National Womens party was founded by a woman named alice paul in 1913, as the Congressional Union for womens suffrage. He was called out to testify and when they would ask him a series of questions mostly about the practice of polygamy. At the time president smith was a practicing polygamist. Theres some good political cartoons related to this time period and in looking through the papers, unfortunately, i did not see any that reed smoot kept or not part of his original papers. Heres a few that relate to this time period, some of these might be related to the fears that were going on. Some of these relate to the testimony of president smith. There are some things that were said that kind of put the church in a bad light or put him in a bad light that maybe werent the most helpful to reed smoot, to senator smoot at the time. They were worried that extreme on what would be called the right and extreme on the left would actually cause turmoil that would break down American Government, that the only way to solve the problems of American Government was to find some middle reform, some middlelevel reform. Now, i appreciate very much randy mentioning my book, and along with david bernsteins book, too, which i think is a very good book, but i have two things to pitch for myself about that. I think if youre going to read those two books, youd ought to review my review of bernstein, because its a bit unfair. He wrote his book about 20 years after mine, so i had a shot back at him in a review. The other thing, if you were really interested in that subject, i ought to tell you that the book that youll see in the gift store is not its part of a series that doesnt allow footnotes.
