Candid Cash: Photo exhibit retraces Folsom Prison concert of Johnny Cash and friends

Sociologists have debated for decades the rehabilitative value prisons have on the inmate. Older schools of thought hold that prison is by definition a punitive institution, meant to punish and therefore discourage aberrant behavior in the future. More recently, efforts have been made to reshape inmates while inside, offering them opportunities to recast themselves to live productive lives upon release.

“1968: A Folsom Redemption,” a collection of photographs and memories of journalists photographer Dan Poush and writer Gene Beley who were among a handful of eyewitnesses to the Jan. 13, 1968, Johnny Cash concerts at Folsom Prison, goes on display Friday in the Windgate Gallery on the campus of the University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock.

“Variations & Mutations,” blown glass art by Ed Pennebaker, is on display through June 30 in the Windgate Gallery at the Center for Humanities and Arts on the campus of University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock.
