Refugee who found a home in Williamston but fled to Canada fearing deportation is fighting to return

WILLIAMSTON, Mich. â Zakaria Mohamed left Somalia as a refugee at 16 and found a home in Williamston.
âWhen I first met Zakaria he was just one of those people you have a connection with,â said Kimberly O Brien. She and her husband Corey adopted Mohamed when he was 18.
But after just 18 months with the O Brien family, Mohamed fled to Canada for fear of being deported back to Somalia.

The organization Samaritas helped Mohamed resettle in Michigan.

Safe Families for Children is stepping up to provide emergency child care for parents in crisis situations in the Lansing area.

When they can t take care of their children because of hospitalizations, homelessness or other emergencies, the nonprofit organization steps in to provide care and safe homes for the kids.
âWe want to create stability so we can help, and you can keep your children and stabilize them in housing and whatever your crisis is,â said Christine Lau, a Safe Families for Children coordinator.
