Each semester, three student organizations go head-to-head to raise money for their service projects during Impact Week. Like the name suggests, these service projects are designed to have a positive impact on William & Mary and the Williamsburg community. To receive the $5,000 of prize money given by anonymous donors, the organizations encourage fellow students to vote for their project in the form of a $5 gift to any area of William & Mary. First place receives $2,500 towards their project, second place receives $1,500 and third place receives $1,000.
In this spring s Impact Week, from April 19-23, the three organizations that competed were Kappa Sigma, supporting the Williamsburg House of Mercy; InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, supporting 3e Restoration; and Greater City, also supporting 3e Restoration.
The first thing many people notice about Darlene White is her sunny demeanor.
“Darlene White exemplifies the best of William & Mary by having a willing attitude and being so friendly,” said Liz Gentry, an administrative & fiscal manager at the Charles Center who has gotten to know White over the years.
An affable, talkative type, White pours her passion and positivity into her job as a lead custodian on William & Mary’s Historic Campus, including stewardship of the Wren Building.
But this fall, it was harder than ever for her to do that.
White’s mother, Veola Minns, contracted COVID-19 and died in October. It was a deeply painful time for White, who was already dealing with the challenges of performing custodial duties on campus during the pandemic.
Members of the COVID Community Collaboration are eliminating obstacles that greater Williamsburg’s under-served residents face in getting their vaccinations.
