W&M Commencement award winners to join Pres Rowe for Community Conversation

The James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup The James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup was established in honor of a William & Mary student who served with distinction in the First World War and lost his life before he could return to graduate. The award recognizes the student who best exemplifies character, scholarship and leadership. The recipient of the 2021 Carr Memorial Cup is Abram Clear ’21. Clear will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics and anthropology and recently accepted an offer to pursue a fully-funded linguistics M.A. at University of Toronto. A 2021 Rhodes Scholarship finalist, Clear distinguished himself as a true academic and campus leader. His senior honors thesis focused on the dialect of his family, based in the Appalachian Mountains, specifically on vowel production and perception.

W&M honors dedicated degree navigator with Duke Award

Photo - of - by Jennifer L. Williams |  April 27, 2021 A diploma from William & Mary comes with lots of perks, and with an additional stamp of approval. If a student has earned the credits to graduate, Wendy Urbano has shepherded every single one of them along to make sure it happens. For her twin superpowers of meticulous proficiency and great attitude while doing it, Urbano, manager of academic and degree progress in the Office of the Registrar, will be honored with the 2021 Charles and Virginia Duke Award. The award recognizes outstanding employees for exemplary individual accomplishments in their professional lives and service to the William & Mary community.” Urbano will officially be recognized at Commencement on May 21-23. She is one of two people to receive Duke Awards this year. The other is Darlene White, a lead custodian on W&M’s Historic Campus.

Darlene White receives Duke Award for deep commitment to William & Mary

The first thing many people notice about Darlene White is her sunny demeanor.  “Darlene White exemplifies the best of William & Mary by having a willing attitude and being so friendly,” said Liz Gentry, an administrative & fiscal manager at the Charles Center who has gotten to know White over the years.  An affable, talkative type, White pours her passion and positivity into her job as a lead custodian on William & Mary’s Historic Campus, including stewardship of the Wren Building.  But this fall, it was harder than ever for her to do that.  White’s mother, Veola Minns, contracted COVID-19 and died in October. It was a deeply painful time for White, who was already dealing with the challenges of performing custodial duties on campus during the pandemic.
