Nineteen forty one would prove to be a fateful year for many across Ireland. The Second World War was in its second year. Even though Britain had not succumbed to a Nazi invasion, there seemed no end in sight and no clear path to victory. The British were struggling to safeguard their convoys in the Atlantic, their armies faced growing challenges in North Africa and although the RAF had won the Battle of Britain, they were powerless to prevent the bombing of British cities.

HERMITAGE â City officials took another step Wednesday evening toward securing state funding to create a town center in Hermitage.
The Hermitage Board of Commissioners voted to submit an application to the stateâs Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program for a $2.5 million grant.
Commissioner William McConnell abstained from the vote due to his familyâs ownership of the Shenango Valley Mall property. The GFM 23 group, which is in the process of selling the mall to Akron-based LRC Realty, is comprised of William McConnell and 22 other descendants of George McConnell, who once owned a farm on the property at East State Street and North Hermitage Road.
