Progressivism less and to think about what i think its core dialect guy dialectic was. The tension between democracy and efficiency. These were both ideals that people from a Broad Spectrum of political backgrounds and the progressive era believed were important, and they believed they were not incompatible but you can see in some ways in which they were fundamentally add some tension. Throughout class today, well be thinking about democracy versus efficiency. The central question for this historians of the early at 20 century is what is progressivism . A famous article that came out in 1982 was entitled in search of progressivism, which i think aptly summed up the way historians were rummaging around knowing the progressive era existed but quibbleing about what counted as progressive severe them and who counted and when it started and when it ended. Some people limit only to the Political Party that it was named for. Others to find it much more broadly. For me, in this class, this is

Discussion of colin dueck, age of iron. Which is a marvelous analysis of conservative nationalism. I see a couple of things about the book in the moment but before i do i want to extend on your behalf in mine a warm welcome to colin dueck and to distinguish commentators. As you probably know colin dueck is a professor at george mason esiversity and is also a nonresident fellow at the American Enterprise institute next door. Literally. Colin dueck has made his mark thinking deeply about american politics. And this book is trademark direct. It examines the concept of conservative nationalism that has been brought to public attention conspicuously to the rise of President Trump. In terms of both the history of ideas and how these ideas have found manifestation in the history. Especially in the debates in the world. So the book is both encompassing and granular simultaneously. And despite the gravity of the subject, i assure you its a delightful read. I read the book over the last ten and
Others to be typical americans, somehow, but they are not a majority of the population. They need more in order to win. The Democratic Party has always been a coalition of out groups, people who are supposed sometimes not to be typical americans but who together when they hold together can be a majority. Of course they dont always hold together, and we get fights within the Democratic Party. And that dynamic has continued even as the composition of the republicans core constituency and of the groups in the Democratic Coalition have chang changed. These were very old Political Parties, Democratic Party formed in 1832 to reelect Andrew Jackson. They succeeded in doing hah. The Republican Party formed in 1854 to oppose the kansas nebraska act of slavery and the territories, they succeeded on that, within a decade or so. But they have continued ever since. And you beginning in your introduction basically going back to election day 2016, you write, quote, panic is a poor guy to reality. The
fast track permitting for american energy ban federal regulations. that last point is what you may hear people describing as congress cannot pass regulations or legislation that adds to the deficit without making equivalent cuts elsewhere. to help us understand if this deal is any good we are joined now by someone who definitely understands how to read a budget, former entrepreneur and now of course 202024 presidential candidate. your reaction to this deal. i think it is a positive step forward. i think it is premature to celebrate too much, steve. funding for the irs. it was 80 billion came down to 78 billion instead. i think this was a victory, an incremental victory. this is just the first step of if the republicans take control of the white house and the senate what we will do is actually shut down the administrative state. that is really where the keys to the kingdom are. i will give kevin mccarthy credit for that but i don t want to celebrate too much. very funny yo
