let me be the first to tell you that there is finally a new speaker of the house, and the 118 congress has officially been convened. it took four days, and 15 tries, but in the early hours of this morning, the california congressman, kevin mccarthy, was finally elected the new speaker, putting him third in line for the presidency of the united states. it was a tough road getting there, especially last night, when tensions between republican members themselves, almost reached a breaking point. from the house reconvened at 10 pm last night, republicans appeared hopeful that they had votes to elect mccarthy on the 14th ballot, but when that seem headed for baylor, mccarthy s allied huddled around the florida congressman, matt gates, to get him to vote for mccarthy. instead, gates voted present, which is not good enough to win mccarthy in speakership. after the roll call, mccarthy himself approached gates, the two exchanged words amid a group of other lawmakers. mccarthy was the
not even bothering to disguise their identities. and why should why you should not buy into the hype that the fbi search at mar-a-lago is somehow unprecedented. good evening, i m jason johnson in for joy reid and we begin 24 hours perhaps after the biggest story of the american presidency, that for the first time in history the fbi conducted a search at the home of a former president, that of donald trump. we have learned a lot more about what went down in his mar-a-lago residence, but there are still a lot of up answered questions. a source familiar with the matter tells nbc news that the search was tied to classified information trump allegedly took with him when he left the white house. remember back in february the national archives asked the justice department to investigate if trump s handling of white house records violated federal law. it came a month after the archives retrieved 15 boxes of presidential records taken to mar-a-lago. nbc news that the fbi notified tr
into his home and cracked open his safe in what he called a raid. now, this is an extraordinary development and remarkable escalation of the investigations surrounding the former president. trump has already weaponized the search and using to fund raise already. here is how his son eric is explaining it on fox. to have 30 fbi agents, actually more than that, descend on mar-a-lago, give absolutely, you know, no notice, go through the gate, start ransacking an office, ransacking a closet, you know, they broke into a safe, he didn t even have anything in the safe. i mean, give me a break. the purpose of the raid from what they said was because national archives wanted to corroborate whether or not donald trump had any documents in his possession. and my father has worked so collaboratively with them for months. in fact the layer working on this was totally shocked, he said i have such an amazing relationship with these people and all of a sudden no notice, they send 20 cars an
on. the deadline is noon, but it could happen before then. the justice department has been ordered by a federal judge to release a redacted version of the affidavit used to justify the fbi s search of mar-a-lago, again, by noon today. it could come out earlier. the affidavit lays out why investigators believe there was probable cause that crimes had been committed. and in his order that came out yesterday very quickly judge bruce reinhart said the justice department had made a good argument for why portions of this document that are behind the mar-a-lago search should remain shielded, saying, quote, disclosure would reveal the identities of witnesses, law enforcement agents, uncharged parties, maybe the investigation s strategy, direction, scope. sources, methods and grand jury information. the judge agreeing with the justice department s requested cuts as we are learning new details about what s happening inside trump s legal team and the advice that he is getting from a
