ASHEVILLE - A famously shouty chef recently visited Western North Carolina to learn about Appalachian and Cherokee traditions from foragers, farmers, Native Americans and one local restaurateur.
Gordon Ramsay, perhaps best known to the general public as the acerbic star of Hell s Kitchen, is more subdued in person, said William Dissen, chef-owner of The Market Place in Asheville. He s a very kind and very diplomatic man, and very different than what you see on TV shows, Dissen said. He s very down to earth, even though he s an ultra celebrity.
Dissen was selected by National Geographic as somewhat of an unofficial ambassador of Appalachia for the Smoky Mountains episode of Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted. Dissen s task was to show Ramsay around a bit, and then send him off in pursuit of regional adventure.
