The city of Jacksonville will start its COVID-19 vaccinations Monday by using a system in which the birth months of Duval County residents will determine what day of the week they can show up at two senior centers on a first-come, first-served basis.
The initial rollout of the vaccines will follow the state s guidelines for the vaccine to go to those who are 65 and older, along with front-line medical workers and first responders.
Where to get vaccinated in Jacksonville
Jacksonville will operate vaccination sites at the Mandarin Senior Center, 3848 Hartley Road, and the Lane Wiley Senior Center at 6710 Wiley Road on the Westside. Those city-run sites will be in addition to the state-run operation at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
More than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases in Northeast Florida – and near 20,000 statewide – were reported Thursday as the virus’s spread reached record levels despite ongoing vaccination efforts.
The 19,816 new cases reported statewide was the highest single-day count on record for the 10-month-old coronavirus pandemic.
Another 164 Floridians were reported dead from the virus, including 11 in the six-county region that includes Jacksonville, a daily update from Florida’s Department of Health showed.
The virus’s reach grew as Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said two senior centers that have been used as COVID testing sites were closing to be refitted to handle only vaccinations.
