Wild About Harry speakers laud Truman s legacy

The Examiner The decisions President Harry S. Truman made three-quarters of a century ago – and the example he set – continue to shape the country, speakers at a Truman virtual event said.  “He really is still very much a living presence in Washington, D.C.,” said Chris Wallace, a Fox News journalist and author of the recent book “Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World.”  Wallace spoke Thursday night at the annual Wild About Harry event, a fundraiser for the Truman Library Institute. The event raised $630,415. The institute is a private non-profit that promotes and supports the work of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence. 

Truman Legacy of Leadership Award

The Examiner Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha J. Power is this year’s recipient of the Truman Legacy of Leadership Award. The award, which has been given to such notable figures as former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard Myers and former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, is to be presented May 6 at the Truman Library Institute’s annual Wild About Harry event. For the second straight year, that event is being held virtually. In 2003, Power won a Pulitzer Prize for A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide,” about the country’s inaction in the face of genocide during the 20th century, including Armenia during World War I, the Holocaust and the ethnic cleansing during the war in Kosovo in the late 1990s. Later she joined the Obama administration, first serving on the National Security Council and then, from 2013 to 2017, as ambassador to the United Nations.

Belfast actress Eileen Pollock, star of sitcom Bread, dies aged 73

She was best known for her portrayal of Lilo Lill in the BBC comedy series Bread. In a death notice Ms Pollock s family said she had died peacefully at her home in London on Sunday. She is survived by sister Natalie, and was described as a loved aunt and great aunt . Your beauty, laughter and loving eyes gave joy to all, her family said. Ms Pollock was born in Belfast and studied languages at Queen s University. After working briefly as a technical translator she joined Bush Theatre in London, before working with the political theatre collective Belt And Braces. Frustrated at the lack of roles for women, she left the company and co-founded the women s group Bloomers, and later Camouflage, for which she wrote a number of plays.
