It appears that Democrats realize that not allowing police to give written notice
to parents the first time they catch their kids smoking weed or drinking alcohol is a potent issue Republicans could use against them this fall.
A Democratic-backed bill to clarify that cops can inform parents was introduced last week and appears to be on the fast track. It’s a clean-up bill of the last marijuana clean-up bill.
The first clean up bill was a way to get Gov. Phil Murphy to sign weed legalization while assuaging concerns from the Legislative Black Caucus. But now the leader of that caucus, Sen. Ron Rice, is OK with allowing parental notification. So how did the original clean-up bill end up including language that barred parental notification? I don’t know.

The superintendent of Camden City public schools announced Friday confirmed that three schools will close down at the end of the school in June. The district has originally considered closing four schools as part of a cost-saving measure.
The fourth, 101-year-old Yorkship Family School, will remain open, district officials said. Sharp Elementary, Wiggins College Preparatory Lab School and Cramer Elementary are still slated to close.
Cramer Elementary, Sharp Elementary, and Wiggins College Preparatory Lab School will be shut down.
Superintendent Katrina McCombs said when an extra $13 million was secured from the state, Yorkship Family School was a priority to save. About 85% of their seats are filled. It s because they are the only school in that neighborhood, said McCombs on Friday.
She says about 1,000 students will be affected by the three closures, and all students will be bussed to their new school, regardless of distance.
Photos provided by the district show examples of the disrepair in the old buildings. McCombs also says the increasing number of charter and renaissance schools in the city has cut into public school enrollment.
