Wichita Theatre adapted, thrived through COVID

Wichita Theatre adapted, thrived through COVID Richard Carter The 2020 Wichita Theatre production schedule did not go as planned, said Dwayne Jackson, president/co-executive producer, but he and their team adapted, and have continued to adapt, to the circumstances of COVID-19 in order to produce entertaining shows that were safe for their audiences to enjoy and for their actors and production crews to participate.   The Wichita Theatre just completed a three-week (with a one-week holdover) production of “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and is currently readying “Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure” to open April 23. The Theatre also announced last week their huge summer production “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” musical running from June 18 through the end of July.

Matilda full of magical moments, moving score

Matilda full of magical moments, moving score Brian Lang The Wichita Theatre has taken on the daunting challenge of staging the Broadway smash hit “Matilda the Musical” with gusto, undeterred even by the months-long delay caused by COVID. It’s the kind of show that will grab the attention of even the most ambivalent theater-goer with its sweet story and thrumming score. The story of Matilda, the book-wormish girl who combines magic and kindness to fight the adults who get in her way, is not unfamiliar to most people. The classic children’s novel by Roald Dahl has garnered fans for generations, only amplified by its nostalgic 90’s film adaptation. It’s no surprise that this popularity would spawn a musical version of the story, but it’s a rare feat for a musical based off of a classic pop culture touchstone such as this one to be so good.
