'Matilda' full of magical moments, moving score

The Wichita Theatre has taken on the daunting challenge of staging the Broadway smash hit “Matilda the Musical” with gusto, undeterred even by the months-long delay caused by COVID. It’s the kind of show that will grab the attention of even the most ambivalent theater-goer with its sweet story and thrumming score.
The story of Matilda, the book-wormish girl who combines magic and kindness to fight the adults who get in her way, is not unfamiliar to most people.
The classic children’s novel by Roald Dahl has garnered fans for generations, only amplified by its nostalgic 90’s film adaptation. It’s no surprise that this popularity would spawn a musical version of the story, but it’s a rare feat for a musical based off of a classic pop culture touchstone such as this one to be so good.
