The state is a multifront war zone. A growing number of outofcontrol fires, 22 at latest count have, burned more than 170,000 acres. Since sunday, at least 21 people have been killed. Nearly 400 have been reported missing. More than 3500 homes and businesses are wiped out. Carter evans begins our coverage. Reporter amid yet another day of burning homes and towering flames, cal fire chief did not mince words this is a serious, critical, catastrophic event. Reporter this justreleased dash cam video is from a Sonoma County patrol car, a deputy driving through the flames. Right now the california Highway Patrol is going door to door, advising residents of possible approaching fires. And lilian, the fire is getting dangerously close to heavily populated areas. So far firefighters in Northern California have been unable to control a string of 22 catastrophic wildfires. Powerful winds are fanning the flames and officials warn the worst is not over. At least 23 deaths are blamed on the fires. 3,500 buildings and homes have been destroyed and more are under way. Reporter good morning. That number 23 dead could rise. Theyre afraid of that. There are a number of reasons for that. So many people are missing still four days into this and, secondly, they even not had a chance to search every home thats burned down. As you mentioned, strong winds are driving this fire and the winds are expected to get stronger as the day goes on. Exaggerating when i say it is a ghost town here. You can see behind us. But the city tonight is calling the mandatory evacuation a success. The only activity youre going to see out here tonight, the only activity weve seen out here tonight is law enforcement. And believe me, there are a lot of Police Officers on patrol here. And were told any unauthorized person who is found in the town of calistoga is subject to arrest. The air assault on the tubbs fire continued at dusk. The thick smoke all but blacked out the setting sun. Overnight flames destroyed homes Anderson Bennett lane. One of them belonged to this young man who told us he had only minutes to grab his cat and get out. He drove the three and a half miles to his parents home in town. Thats where we found him and his dad, who was hosing down the roof. Theyre not leaving, despite the mandatory Evacuation Order. It appears most of the 5,000 people who live in calistoga did leave.
