and in the northeast, it is hilly, not flat. all the water that falls in the hills and mountains rushes into lower elevations and those are all the people that live near the streams and creeks that had it horrible. a lot of images from philadelphia, city center i was seeing, even in the downtown area, they re flooded, water in businesses and homes. we haven t even mentioned, there was a dam break in pennsylvania yesterday, town of whitmore got completely flooded. there are stories outside of new york city and philadelphia that had a lot of damage. cities get the most attention. it is unbelievable, stephanie, a storm that made landfall four days ago was still able to cause this much damage, almost 2,000 miles away from where it came on shore. we know in the city of philadelphia all city buildings are going to be closed today.
the town of whitmore is flooded. this wedge tornado went through around 5:00 or 6:00, right before sunset. that in itself would be a huge headline breaking story all by itself. let me just show you some of the statistics here. newark with this storm had 8.44 inches of rain. central park had over 7 inches of rain. it wasn t like it was an isolated i mean new york had over 6 inches of rain. this was widespread from pennsylvania through new jersey and new york and into connecticut and it s still raining in areas in boston and cape cod. in one hour, newark had 3.24. that was the most ever recorded in a single hour. new york city, which has a period of record that goes back about 170 years had 3.15. both was the most it had ever seen in one single hour. as far as six hour totals.
